A Note about Chinese Seals

When the scroll passes into the hands of a collector, he will add his own seals either on the picture itself or it’s mounting or over the seams where they were joined.Seals were not put on bodies of water cause it was a symbol of impermanence.

A Scroll with Wang Hsien-Chih’s Calligraphy and Hsiang Yüan-Pien’s Seals (Pictured above)

An example of not so discreet seal stamping. Ming collector Hsiang Yüan-Pien plastered his seals all over the scroll.
